Where to get your Brisbane Food Truck Fix?

For the last year Brisbane has been in the grip of a revolution.

People from all walks of life have taken to the streets in their hundreds, united in a common purpose. These crowds are in search of one thing and one thing only – the answer to the question;

“FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHERE ARE THE FOOD TRUCKS?”

While I’ll admit to indulging my penchant for the dramatic in the previous scenario make no mistake – there HAS been a revolution.

Go back even 2 years ago and food in vans meant one of two things…

1. The Smoko Van – dried out sausage rolls and sandwiches you buy because there’s no decent food near where you work

2. Carnie food – the kind of van that sells dagwood dogs and soggy chips at the Ekka or your local school fete.

Fast forward to last year and suddenly the food from vans/trucks is not just good… it’s amazing!

Representing cultures and cuisines from all over the world, food trucks are now the go-to for fresh, tasty, exciting food in a casual setting. This style of eating is perfectly suited to Brisbane’s (generally) awesome weather, and that fact that each truck specialises in just a couple of things means the food is always on point.

But back to the original question: where can you find these roving culinary ninjas?

To help you satisfy your cravings I’ve put together this handy guide to Brisbane’s food truck events – so you’ll always know where you can get your fix…

Eat Street Markets

When: Fridays & Saturdays from 4.00 pm – 10.00 pm, Sundays from 10.00 am – 3.00pm from 3 May onwards.

Where: Hamilton Wharf, Northshore

Eat Street is the original Brisbane food truck event,  and is now so much an entrenched part of our food scene that we often forget it was originally a temporary event! With over 60 truck and shipping containers boasting some of Brisbane’s finest truck tucker Eat Street is a must-do for anyone who loves food.

Thank Truck It’s Thursday

When: Every Thursday night from 5.00pm

Where: Wandering Cooks, 1 Fish Lane, Southbank

One of Brisbane’s longest running regular food truck events, Thank Truck It’s Thursday is a great way to get a mid-week truck food fix. The line-up features food trucks, DJ’s, drinks and general good times.

Friday Night Snack-Down

When: Every Friday night from 4.00 pm – 10.00 pm

Where: Wandering Cooks, 1 Fish Lane, Southbank

Wandering Cooks’ newest venture is not strictly a food truck event, it IS a causal street food event with an interesting twist. Every week two food trucks representing a different cuisine go head to head to see which one is the most popular, as voted by customers on the night. The winner then returns the following week to face a new opponent

Love Your Local Markets

When: Fridays from 4.00 pm – 8.30pm

Where: Rotates between venues in Morningside, Norman Park and Cannon Hill. Check out their Facebook page to see where they will be on any given week.

These relaxed, family friendly markets offer a great variety of food trucks as well as market stalls and entertainment. Plenty of seating plus room for the kids to run around too!

Oz Night Markets

When: Saturday 5.30 pm – 9.30 pm

Where: 139 Brisbane Road, Booval

Featuring over 20 different food trucks and food stalls the Oz Night Markets are a great place to visit if you’re looking for authentic food that’s a little off the beaten track. Why not try a Transylvanian Cheese Pie from Veronica’s Kitchen while you’re there?

Downey Park Trucks

When: Once a month on Sunday 3.00 pm – 6.00 pm

Where: Downey Park, Northey Street, Windsor

After the sucess of their first event last month the Downey Park Food Trucks are set to become a fegular monthly event!  This month’s event is this Sunday 26th April – but make sure you like their Facebook page to stay in the loop with when next month’s event will take place.

Brooklyn Standard Laneway Partyz

When: Fridays  5.00 pm – 11.00 pm

Where: Eagle Lane, Brisbane

Brooklyn Standard has recently launched this weekly lane-way party and IT. GOES. OFF! I popped in briefly early last Friday evening and it was already pumping.  My advice is to come early for the food truck and stay on for the party ๐Ÿ˜‰

The events listed above are the regular food truck events around town. But there are also two special food truck events coming up that you won’t want to miss…

Eats & Beats

When: Friday 24 April from 5.00pm

Where: Hyperdome POutdoor Event Area, Leda Drive, Loganholme

If you’re a south-side foodie you really should get yourself to Eats & Beats this Friday night. With over 20 (yes you read that right) food vans to choose from you will be in food-truck Nirvana!

Tinnies & Two-Up

When:  Saturday 25 April from 11.00am

Where: Shafeston Hotel

The lane-ways around the Shafeston Hotel will come alive this Anzac Day with food trucks, craft beer tinnies and a massive outdoor Two-Up arena. The event also supports Mates 4 Mates –  a not for profit organisation who provides care for Australian Defence Force members and their families.

Have you experienced dining “truck-side” yet?

If the answer is yes then I hope you have fun working your way through these regular events. And if not… well what the TRUCK are you waiting for?!

  1. Hi rachel, great article and thanks for mentioning us! One minor adjustment … Friday Nite Snackdown is awesome, but not a food truck event.

Hi Angela, I know I should have made that more clear! I have fixed it so that it isn’t so confusing now. Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I had a night with my city in New Farm last week, finally figured out where that was, and I remembered the fun that was living in a city. As the kids get older we’ll go to more markets like the yummy ones you’ve suggested. Big hug xx
