Summer Fashion Trends 2014: Nikki from Styling You

Welcome to the first post in the Our Town Brisbane summer fashion series!

This week marked the official start of summer, and even though its been hot for weeks here in Brisbane you cant help but feel a certain something in the air once the calendar clicks over into December. There are presents to buy, parties to go and holidays on the horizon… what’s not to be excited about!

Its also that time of the year when we resurrect last years summer wardrobe and try to work out what to keep, what to ditch and most importantly what we need to BUY.   And while I can usually work out what to ditch (anything that screams five second fad or doesn’t fit well) knowing what to buy is often a bit of a minefield.

And that’s where experts like Nikki come in.

Nikki  almost needs no introduction – she is one of the most influential fashion bloggers in Australia and internationally, and creator or the massively successful Every Day Style challenge on Facebook and Instagram. Her focus on real girl style and her belief that ALL women deserve to look and feel fabulous has endeared her to a legion of fans – me included!

This year has been a big one for Nikki. She’s moved from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane AND she’s and released her first book “Unlock Your Style”.

But enough from me! Read on to find out Nikki’s tips on summer fashion trends 2014, including how to create a versatile wardrobe that will take you through the season in style…

In your book Unlock Your Style you provide some fabulous tips on creating a capsule wardrobe. Can you let us in on a few of the items that we should have in our summer capsule wardrobe?

I’m all about the basics first, show ponies later. A summer capsule wardrobe for Brisbane would include: white tees – at least two, chambray shorts, tan flat sandals, white ripped jeans, lightweight kimono jacket, striped smart casual dress, white lightweight blazer, nude wedges or heels, a cocktail dress or kaftan.

What colours / patterns / textures do you love this summer?

I love the freshness of white and chambray. It’s a great combination for our climate. I’ve also never met a striped garment I haven’t loved! For a riot of luxurious colour, I can’t go past an embellished kaftan.

What will be your “go to” outfit or piece this summer? Something you think you’ll wear to death by the end of the season!

For casual: a striped dress from Bohemian Traders

For smartening up any outfit: a white 3/4 jacket from Blue Illusion

For glamour: a Camilla kaftan

Any summer beauty products you can’t live without?

Sunscreen – NIVEA Moisturising Body Lotion and Dermalogica Protect 50 Sport

Garnier BB Cream

Nars Illuminator in Orgasm

Benefit They’re Real Mascara

Bobbi Brown powder foundation

Thank you for sharing your summer wardrobe tips Nikki – my shopping list is now officially sorted πŸ™‚

  1. It just so happens that I’ll be at the shops tomorrow (I haven’t been since I met up with the lovely Lauren from Create Bake Make), We’re Santa photo’ing but I’ll be keeping my eye out for a little white jacket. Thanks for all the style tips Nikki, I love stripes too and how good is Garnier BB cream I’m using 2 parts light and 1 part medium mixed together at the moment.
    Great post!
Have a gorgeous weekend ladies xx

I am about the only person in the universe that hasn’t tried BB cream yet but I am definitely going to give it a go this summer. Are you in Brisbane Dannielle?

  2. Oh, some great summer tips there! I’ve been eyeing out Bohemian Traders’ website lately. Waiting for that right moment to buy one of their gorgeous linen dresses or poppy pants.
