First of all… a big congratulations on your engagement!
Because chances are if you’re reading this the question’s been popped (and received a positive answer), the ring has been oohed and aahed over, and you’ve updated your relationship status on Facebook.
So what happens next?
The first few weeks of your engagement are usually spent in a happy bubble of love. You’ll talk about who you’ll ask to be in the bridal party. Ladies will probably buy a stack of outrageously expensive bridal magazines.
But then one of you, usually but not always the bride, eventually wakes up, smells the coffee and realises…
“Holy wedding cake Batman, I have a CRAP-LOAD of things to organise!!”
The good news is, as long as you don’t plan to get married in a month’s time there are plenty of things you can leave until a bit closer to the date.
But there are a couple of aspects of your big day that it pays to nail down as soon as possible. Venues, photographers and cake makers can booked up 12 months in advance for popular months, and choosing your outfits can often influence the style, colours and even the theme of your whole day.
So to help you plan your Brisbane wedding here’s my list of the top five wedding priorities you should get sorted ASAP, along with some suggestions for each one.
A dress for Her…
No matter what style you have in mind there are two things you need from a from a bridal boutique: a range of designers and dress styles, and experienced staff to assist you with making your selection. These three boutiques have longstanding reputations within the Brisbane bridal-wear market so I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
Best For: Competitively priced couture gowns! Prices range between $1,800 – $3,800. Viewings are by appointment only, and feature a 1 hour complimentary consultation with a bridal consultant.
Best For: Exquisite tailoring for an absolutely perfect fit. Anne Bertossi and her team work closely with their bides to create their dream dress, which includes FIVE fittings to ensure the perfect fit.
Best For: A great range of couture and ready to wear. Wendy Makin has over 30 years experience dressing Brisbane brides and her name is almost synonymous with Brisbane bridal-wear.
A Suit For Him
Guys, your wedding day is your big chance to dress up – but that doesn’t mean you need stress out! Whether you choose to buy or hire here are some options that will have you and your groomsmen looking sharp…
Best For: A modern take on the traditional suit. One look at the Politix collection tells you everything you need to know – clean lines, ultra-modern styling and classy without being stuffy. They also stock all the extras you need from shirts like these to pocket squares and cuff links.
Best For: Traditional tuxedos you can hire. If you’re not keen to buy (and if you only wear a suit to weddings and funerals you probably aren’t) then you can hire your tux from FormalWear Express. They have a massive range of tuxedos and the best part is they’ll do a custom fitting for you and the groomsmen in your home!
Your reception venue is without doubt the biggest wedding decision you’ll make – as well as setting the scene for your celebration it is also usually the biggest investment cost-wise. So you need to start considering your options ASAP, especially if you’ve got your heart set on a particular date or location.
This shortlist that represents the cream of Brisbane’s reception venues, all set in uniquely beautiful Brisbane locations…
For a wedding on the course… Hillstone St Lucia
For a wedding overlooking the river… The Landing at Dockside
For a vineyard wedding… Sirromet
For a chic city wedding… Stamford Plaza
For a wedding on a mountain…. Topiaries
When you hire a wedding photographer you’re entrusting them with the memories of your special day – and that’s a pretty big deal! Again the good photographers book up quickly so once the venue is settled this really should be your next priority.
Both the photographers recommended do truly amazing work but have different styles…
Best for: Romantic images that take your breath away. The Milque portfolio speak for itself – just stunningly beautiful images with an almost crystal like clarity. All their photos look effortlessly gorgeous and elegant.
Best for: Quirky style that lets your personality shine through. Ryder focuses on capturing the unscripted moments that that make your day YOURS. No cheesy or forced poses – just the the joy, emotion and wonder of your wedding in an image that will make you smile years later.
The sweet centrepiece of your special day, a wedding cake can be a simple and elegant or a five-tiered extravaganza! Either way you’ll need to decide on a design, number of tiers, flavours and colours so the sooner you start the better…
Best for: A seriously HUGE range of designs. From contemporary ruffle cakes to traditional styles Cake that is sure to have a design that complements your wedding theme.
Best for: Awesome flavours and the chance to try before you buy. Does the sound of Grand Marnier , Kahlua & almond and caramel mud flavoured cake sound good to you? You can try these flaours and more plus view cake designs at Judy’s monthly cake tasting events.
Best for: Cupcakes of course! If you decide you don’t want to go with the traditional wedding cake cupcakes make a perfect alternative. Seriously these are almost too pretty to eat (notice I said almost!).
Getting these five areas planned and booked early will save you so much stress later on – and that means more time for enjoying the lead-up to your special day!
