Hold on to your hats Brisbane, because the Spiegeltent has blown into town bringing with it one of the craziest, most awe-inspiring shows we’ve ever had the pleasure of being shocked by….
Fresh from four years of sold out shows in Las Vegas, ABSINTHE arrived earlier this week to grab the city by the short and curlies (so to speak).
The Chef and I were lucky enough to get tickets to Wednesday night’s show which also happily coincided with his birthday. So after an early dinner at Jamie’s Italian and a quick Negroni in honour of Negroni Week we made our way to King George Square.
Bathed in green light from Brisbane City Hall, the Spiegeltent was already buzzing. Although it has visited Brisbane on several previous occasions (last year’s Brisbane Festival) this was the first time I’d ever experienced it cosy, welcoming embrace.
Then the show began… and for the next 90 minutes we were in the hands of our crazed host Gazillionaire and his kooky assistant Abby Bobbins.
So with all the other shows and entertainment happening in Brisbane at the moment why see ABSINTHE?
From the first mesmerising act right through to wiping the final tears of laughter from my eyes 90 minutes later, ABSINTHE takes you on a rollercoaster ride of the senses like no other show I’ve ever seen.
To give you a better idea of what I mean here are just three of the states you’ll pass through on this journey from the sublime to the ridiculous…
1. Shock… at the incredibly politically incorrect jokes.
Within the first 5 minutes of Gazillionaire and Abby’s routine they’ve basically taken a shot at every single sacred cow in today’s society. There are Asian jokes and gay jokes and jokes about angry sexually frustrated white liberals – literally no-one is safe! However the show is so cleverly written that I can guarantee you’ll be cacking yourself despite being more than a bit horrified.
2. Awe… at the extraordinary strength and skill of the performers.
The first act sees a lone performer build a chair stack while he simultaneously climbing as he builds. When it reaches the top of the Spiegeltent he then proceeds to do a series of acrobatic moves which will have your heart in your mouth hoping he doesn’t fall. Like I said…just mesmerising!
3. Lust… at some seriously sexy bits.
Let’s not beat around the bush… there are some VERY attractive people in this production! The Green Fairy does a sensational bump & grind, shedding her wings and costume down to a pair of pasties and some skimpy knickers. And The Chef was ummm… shall we say impressed by two young ladies who performed sensual aerial act in school uniforms. The blokes don’t disappoint either – check out one of my personal favourites Los Dos Tacos…
And if you STILL need another reason to go and see ABSINTHE tout suite, here’s one… it’s almost the best fun you can have with your clothes on 😉
Seriously though, the show is only here until 14th June so grab your tickets now for next week. In fact this would be a perfect way to add a bit of spice to your long weekend… if you know what I mean!

Believe me you won’t regret it!
